Always Intriguing and Always Herself: IRIS

Written by Pauline Ma

We had the absolute pleasure of attending the New York premiere of IRIS – a film by the late Albert Maysles and Magnolia Pictures featuring none other than the iconic Iris Apfel. The screening was hosted by Alexis Bittar, Bill Brand, James Gager, Mindy Grossman, Jenny Lyons, Meredith Melling, Isabel & Ruben Toledo, Stefano Tonchi, and Bruce Weber, and presented by MAC & HSN. That long list of hosts alone shows just how people show up for the rare bird of fashion, as Apfel is known — the Paris Theatre was bubbling with respect for the 93-year-old, utter admiration of her style sense, and modesty in her presence.

The crowd for the premiere was certainly stylish, to say the least, drawing an attendee group that included Carol Alt, Yigal Azrouel, Stacey Bendet, CHris Benz, Alexis Bittar, Maria Cornejo, Francisco Costa, Erin Fetherston, Harold Koda, Misha Nonoo, Tamron Hall, Dree Hemingway, Nicky Hilton. Cory Kennedy, Jenny Lyons, Jay Manuel, Crystal Renn, Hilary Rhoda, Louise Roe, Ralph Rucci, and the list goes on (but you get the gist – an enviable style coalition).

The film, which opens officially next week on April 29, offers an intimate look into the life of Iris Apfel, including scenes of her adorable marriage to her husband of 60+ years, a glimpse into her whimsically decorated home, and insight into her quirky but always confident personality. Filled with moments showing friendship, family, and funny clips of Apfel’s mastery of bargaining, this film is a must-see in our book for anyone who has interest in how the worlds of art, fashion, interior design, and culture intersect — and how Apfel has shed light (and continues to do so) on how style elevates identity.
