Vday Countdown

Written by Ivy Scarlett, Fashion blogger & Style writer

With just a week and bit to go and not a moment to spare, the time now calls for us to get our floppy hats on! Yes, that’s right! It’s that time of year again – the time to start the long-winded process of deciding on the prefect outfit for Valentine’s Day.

No matter what type of girlfriend you are, there are only ever three categories that you can fall into – the hopeless romantic, the not bothered girlfriend, or the girlfriend who’s just in-between. Either way, it’s Valentine’s Day and I think I can speak for most women that for any romantic rendezvous with our beau, we always want to look our best.

With a little help from a few of our favorite online fashion stores; we’ve put together a selection of potential outfit ideas fit for Valentine’s Day to help you on your way to creating your own signature look.

Look 1 Scarlet Fever

There are some who still think wearing red on Valentine’s Day is a too cliché. Personally, I would have to beg to differ. From Cindy Crawford to Halle Berry, Rihanna to Katy Perry; the red dress is a girl’s ultimate ‘go to’ dress, and in my opinion, every girl’s best friend. Available in a range of styles and various shades of red, a red dress looks flattering on all body shapes, and is the perfect dress for turning heads and dropping jaws.

Take this fitted wrap dress from prettylittlething.com in poppy red and pair with a biker style leather jacket for a tad bit of edge. Gold accessories would go perfectly with this look, alongside a pair of gold open toe heels, and finish with an oversized clutch from Patch NYC.

Dress – prettylittlething.us, Lauriell Red Wrap Front Crepe Midi Dress, $38.50
Jacket – bebe.com, Black Leather Biker Jacket
Bag – Patch NYC, Geometric Bird Pouch Clutch, $59.00

Look 2  Art Attack

Scenario: So, you have no clue of where you’re going on Valentine’s Day? All you’ve been told by your significant other is to dress up and be ready for a good time (ahh the joys spontaneity!). If you’re lucky enough to be in this position, but worried about what to wear, don’t fret! Wherever you end up on Valentine’s Day, I’m sure it will be somewhere tasteful and welcoming of a fitted mini drape dress, in an abstract print like this one from London based knitwear designer Ekaterina Kukhareva. If you don’t want to be overdressed, cover up in stylish long line coat, like this trench coat in camel brown from bebe.com. For an added pop of colour, I rock this bright red mini crossover bag from Laurel.

Dress – Ekaterina Kukhareva, Multicolour mini drape dress, $93.60
Coat – bebe.com, Long Trench Coat, $179.00
Bag – Laurel, Mini red crossover bag, £229.00
Shoes – TOPSHOP (US), GOSSIP Flare Heel Mary Janes, $120.00
Earrings – Dyrberg/Kern, Cerith Earrings, £85

Look 3 Royal Affair

Somewhat of an overnight sensation; the velvet trend has skyrocketed off the runways, and landed straight onto the racks of some of our favorite high street brands.
For example, take this super cute long sleeve dress, in mint green velvet from glamorous.com. Alone this dress can easily be worn with a pair of ‘knock em dead’ ankle boots, and a gold studded clutch to match. Though for Valentine’s Day, I would turn up the glamour just a notch, and add a faux fur throw like this one from Helen Moore, for a royal finish.

Fun fact – the colour gray matches beautifully when paired with royal shades, such as mint green, cobalt blue, or royal purple (and of course gold)
Dress – glamorous.com, Mint Velvet Bodycon Dress, $31.63
Shrug – Helen Moore, Jet Faux Fur Stole, $136.00
Bag – TOPSHOP (US), ORLA Studded Crossbody Bag, $48.00
Boots – TOPSHOP (US), HAVEN Electroplated Heel Sock Boot, $150.00
Necklace – Dyrberg/Kern, Glaze Necklace, £99
Earrings – Dyrberg/Kern, Lindsey Grey Opal Earrings, £90
Bangle – Dyrberg/Kern, Aponi Grey Bracelet, £90 // Violetta Bracelet, £85 // Jessy Bracelet, £90

Look 4 Smart Casual

If your plans for Valentine’s Day involve a relaxing quiet evening in with your significant other, then this outfit will be right up your street.

Throw on a pair of skinny jeans like this one from Dona Ida and pair with a wrap-over peplum top from BCBG Maxa Zaria, and some red peep toe heels from Tamaris. This combo is the perfect smart casual look for a romantic night in with bae. For some ear candy –  try rocking these Holographic Circle Earrings from London based jewellery designer, Jane Bowler.

Top – BCBGMAXAZRIA, Eleni Peplum Top, $138.00
Jeans – Donna Ida, IDA Ivy High Top Skinny deep sea, $194.39

Try this Azha Mini Dress from AQ/AQ in lily white, teamed with a pair of HOLLYWOOD Sock Boots from TOPSHOP and this embroidered denim jacket from Joe’s Jeans. With an outfit like this you’ll be well on your way to having a great Valentine’s Day, while looking fake surprised as if your spidey senses hadn’t already narrowed down what your gift could be.

Look 6 Back to Basics

If you have no clue whatsoever on what to wear on Valentine’s Day – go back to basics with some denim jeans and a cowl neck top (preferably in red), and finish with a traditional style bomber jacket, like this one from Nicce. To avoid looking too underdressed, get yourself a pair of Ted Baker love heart studs in rose gold, and a cute Valentine’s Day bracelet from UNOde50’s genderless collection.
